Musée des Beaux-Arts / Palais Rohan, Strasbourg, November 22, 2010 – February 22, 2011
Two of Hendrick Goltzius’ masterpieces, “Adam” and “Eve” were reunited for a special focus exhibition at The Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art in Hartford, Connecticut and the Museum of Fine Arts of Strasbourg. Each museums owns one of a pair of the matching paintings, meant to be shown together, painted in 1613 by the great Dutch artist Hendrick Goltzius (1558-1617). While Eve has been in Strasbourg since 1936, Wadsworth Atheneum acquired Adam more recently, in 2004. This reunion was complemented in Hartford with other paired portraits from the Wadsworth Atheneum’s collection. In Strasbourg, the Goltzius paintings were presented alongside a series of approximately twenty engravings in the same room, and a thematically-related Bill Viola was presented in an adjacent gallery. This FRAME collection exchange was made possible by the generosity of the Annenberg Foundation/GRoW Annenberg.
