Surrealism in American Art

Centre de la Vieille Charité, Marseille

Originally scheduled from June 3 to October 4, 2020 – RESCHEDULED TO 2021
The exhibition aims at proposing an alternative history of postwar American art by looking at the permanence, often downplayed or rendered invisible, of a Surrealist strand, that went on, mostly unnoticed, in Abstract Expressionism until the end of the 1960s. The exhibition benefits from numerous American loans from the FRAME network and will include some of the most celebrated artists of the period, emphasizing some undervalued but key aspects of their work, as well as some artists who have hitherto remained somewhat peripheral.
