ESSEX, CT /PARIS – The FRench American Museum Exchange (FRAME) distributed $58,250. in grant funding to museums in its network to develop a series of online projects that involve 17 collaborating FRAME museums in the United States, Canada and France. These grants will support content development for online programs during the COVID-19 crisis to help museums continue to make their collections and educational programming accessible and engaging to their audiences while their doors are closed. “This one-time special grant opportunity is intended to provide prompt support to FRAME museums wishing to strengthen their accessibility remotely through online outreach programs, said Anne-Solène Rolland, Co-President of FRAME France. William B. Beekman, Co-President of FRAME North America went on to say,
“What is remarkable is the speed at which the Committee worked. The Board appointed an Emergency Support Committee at its April 3 meeting. The Committee met the following week to develop the grant guidelines. All museums in the FRAME network were notified about the Emergency Support program on April 13. They will receive their funds by April 30 and all projects will be online by May 15th.”
The Emergency Support Committee, appointed by the FRAME Board of Trustees, was chaired by Susan Talbott, Expert Director for FRAME in North America and included: Nathalie Bondil (Director and Chief Curator, Montreal Museum of Fine Arts); Sophie Lévy (Director and Curator, Musée d’arts de Nantes); Dorothy Stapleton (Philanthropic Director, FRAME); Ronna Tulgan Ostheimer (Director of Education, Francine and Sterling Clark Art Institute, Williamstown, MA); Emilie Vanhaesebroucke, Executive Director, FRAME, France; and Marguerite d’Aprile Quigley, Executive Director, FRAME, North America. Members of the Committee chose to recuse themselves for discussions about museums in which they were affiliated.
FRAME recognizes the tremendous collaborative efforts of its members during this unprecedented period. Through these projects, 17 institutions, which are more than half of the 32 museums in the FRAME network, will benefit from transatlantic partnerships that strengthen their accessibility remotely.
FRAME Emergency Support grants were given to the following museums:
Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo – $8,450.

Two Projects: Art Alive-Tableaux vivants; Digital Presentations of Op’Art in the Albright-Knox and Nantes collections
Lyon Museum of Fine Arts – $9,900.
FRAME partner museums: Cleveland Museum of Art; Los Angeles County Museum of Art; Palais Beaux-Arts de Lille; Musée Fabre de Montpellier; Petit Palais, Musée des Beaux-Arts de la Ville de Paris; Musées de la Métropole de Rouen Normandie Project: Virtual tour (video) of the decorations painted by Hippolyte Flandrin for the Church of Saint-Germain-des-Prés in Paris based on sketches preserved within the FRAME network collections
Montreal Museum of Fine Arts – $10,000.
FRAME partner museums: Dallas Museum of Art; Palais Beaux-Arts de Lille Project: Our Natural World – A Virtual Sensory Based Experience, aimed at connecting all publics, including neuroatypical audiences.
Museums of Rouen – $9,900.
FRAME partner museums: Historical Museum of Marseille; Montreal Museum of Fine Arts Project: Virtual exhibition about Jewish destinies in World War II
Portland Art Museum – $10,000.
FRAME partner museums: Cleveland Museum of Art; Denver Art Museum; Los Angeles County Museum of Art; Petit Palais, Musée des Beaux-Arts de la Ville de Paris Project: Series of podcasts “Behind the Scenes” – Dialogues between FRAME museums professionals including curators, educators, registrars and other staff.
Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art, Hartford – $10,000.
FRAME partner museums: Musée des Beaux-Arts de Rennes; Musée de Strasbourg Two Projects: Virtually reuniting the paintings of Adam and Eve, by the 17th century Dutch painter, Hendrick Goltzius; A special look at two Cabinets of Curiosities, an authentic Kunstkammer in Rennes and a modern version at Hartford.
