András Szántó Ph.D. (b. 1964), will be one of two keynote speakers at the 2022 FRAME Annual Conference on Wednesday, May 18 in Marseille. Szántó is a widely published author who advises museums, foundations, educational institutions, and corporations on cultural strategy and program development, worldwide. He earned his Ph.D. in sociology from Columbia University. His writings have appeared in The New York Times, Artforum, Artnet, and The Art Newspaper, among other publications. As a consultant, he advises some of the world’s leading cultural institutions and corporate art programs. He has lectured on art business at the Sotheby’s Institute of Art and has directed the National Arts Journalism Program at Columbia University. At the Metropolitan Museum of Art, he helped launched and oversee the Global Museum Leaders Colloquium, a series of 10-day seminars for international museum directors. He is a frequent moderator of the Art Basel Conversations series. Born in Budapest and now a resident of Brooklyn, he has curated exhibitions on Hungarian art of the 60s and 70s in London and New York.

In 2020, András Szántó documented the emerging thinking about art museums in The Future of the Museum: 28 Dialogues (Hatje Cantz). The book, which has been widely read and discussed, surveyed a field in which leaders are “working to make institutions more open, inclusive, experiential, culturally polyphonic, technologically savvy, attuned to their needs of their communities, and engaged in the defining issues of our time.” Drawing on the dialogues and examples of institutions worldwide, Szántó will examine relevant dynamics of change in the museum sector and point to the challenges and opportunities ahead.
