This book features an insightful essay by Sophie Jugie, Director of the Musee des Beaux-Arts de Dijon and presents stunning, evocative photographs of the forty sculptures of The Mourners (les Pleurants) from the tomb of John the Fearless (1342-1404), the second duke of Burgundy. His elaborate tomb, from which these sculptures emerged, was once housed at a monastery on the outskirts of Dijon, but is now one of the centerpieces of the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Dijon.
This publication coincides with the exhibiton, The Mourners: Tomb Sculpture from the Court of Burgundy which features thirty sculptures from Dijon and one from The Cleveland Museum of Art, which will be touring the United States and France from 2010-12. The exhibition is organized by the Dallas Art Museum. (French and English)
