From 2026 to 2028, FRAME is bringing together four prestigious institutions from its consortium for a transatlantic season dedicated to the painter Simon Vouet (1590\u20131649) and his studio, in commemoration of the 400th anniversary of the return to Paris from Italy of the First Court Painter of King Louis the 13th<\/sup>.<\/p>\n

2026-2027<\/span><\/h3>\n

With a rich collection of paintings, drawings, and engravings related to Simon Vouet\u2019s circle, the Rennes Museum of Fine Arts kicks off the season (November 20, 2026-March 21, 2027) by unveiling the Master\u2019s Studio Secrets<\/em>. This studio, a veritable cradle of future French artistic luminaries of the Grand Si\u00e8cle, had a lasting influence on its students: Dorigny, Le Brun, Le Sueur, and Mignard, to name just a few.<\/p>\n

At the same time (December 18, 2026 – April 18, 2027), the Mus\u00e9e Fabre in Montpellier is focusing its research on a little-known work in its collections whose attribution remains uncertain: Herodias Holding the Head of Saint John the Baptist<\/em>. Produced within Vouet\u2019s circle, the painting invites an investigation into the groups of French artists settled in Italy, and more specifically the shifts that occurred between Roman and Parisian circles in the late 1620s.<\/p>\n

In Montpellier, as in Rennes, the exhibitions will benefit from numerous loans that highlight the complementary nature of the collections held in the museums of the FRAME network.<\/p>\n

2027-2028<\/span><\/h3>\n

These two exhibitions, presented as a diptych, will lead into the third component of the season, which will take the form of a major retrospective\u2014the first dedicated to Simon Vouet in the United States, and in France, in over thirty-five years. Co-organized as part of FRAME by the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco (2027) and the Petit Palais, Mus\u00e9e des beaux-arts de la Ville de Paris (2028), the retrospective will shed new light on the work of this artist, who stood at the crossroads of art and power in the early modern era.<\/p>\n

Supporting transatlantic dialogue<\/span><\/h2>\n

With a collection of over 2 million works held by the museums in its network, FRAME supports projects that highlight the works of its consortium through initiatives with significant impact on both sides of the Atlantic.<\/p>\n

To this end, the exhibitions of the Vouet Season 2026\u20132028 received support from FRAME to promote the circulation of collections and ideas, and to foster the exchange of knowledge and perspectives. This support took the form of annual meetings organized with the curators and exceptional financial assistance to contribute significantly to the publication of the catalogs for the three exhibitions. The San Francisco exhibition venue also benefited from a preparatory research travel made possible by a FRAME grant.<\/p>\n
