Martinez\u00a0was a member of the \u00c9cole fran\u00e7aise d&#8217;Ath\u00e8nes from 1993 to 1996, excavating at Delos and Delphi.\u00a0When he returned to France in 1997, he was appointed Chief Curator of Ancient Greek Sculpture at\u00a0the Mus\u00e9e du Louvre and he taught at the \u00c9cole du Louvre. From 2007 to 2013, he headed the\u00a0Louvre&#8217;s Department of Greek, Etruscan and Roman Antiquities, succeeding Alain Pasquier and he\u00a0renovated the entire department. From April 2013 to 2021, Martinez was President-Director of the\u00a0Mus\u00e9e du Louvre, succeeding Henri Loyrette. His aim was to make the Mus\u00e9e du Louvre &#8220;more\u00a0generous, clearer and more accessible,&#8221; and to develop the public interest to permanent collections.\u00a0Following the destruction of heritage in Syria and Iraq, in November 2015 he submitted a report to\u00a0French President Fran\u00e7ois Hollande entitled, \u201cFifty French Proposals to Protect Humanity&#8217;s Heritage.&#8221; Under his tenure, the museum\u2019s storage areas were moved, because of the risk of flooding. In September\u00a02021, Jean-Luc Martinez was appointed Ambassador for International Heritage Cooperation. In this\u00a0role, he submitted a report in April 2023 to Catherine Colonna, Minister of Europe and Foreign Affairs,\u00a0and to Rima Abdul Malik, Minister of Culture, entitled, \u201cShared Heritage: Universality, Restitutions\u00a0and the Circulation of Works of Art.\u201d It suggests a doctrine and a method for examining and\u00a0processing restitution claims in France.<\/p>\n<p>Jean-Luc Martinez\u2019s selected publications include: <em>Beau comme l\u2019Antique<\/em> (2000, with other authors);\u00a0<em>Les Antiques du Louvre: Une histoire du go\u00fbt d\u2019Henri IV \u00e0 Napol\u00e9on Ier<\/em> (2004); <em>Praxit\u00e8le<\/em> (2007, with\u00a0other authors); <em>D\u2019Izmir \u00e0 Smyrne.
