For the past twenty years she has been researching the presence of French sculpture in the US which resulted in a <a href=\"https:\/\/frenchsculpture.org\/\">database<\/a> of 14 051 sculptures by 1047 artist in 612 locations, from 1500 to 1950, and she has just recently published a book in both languages, with 444 pictures based on her research. Formerly at Mus\u00e9e d\u2019Orsay, where she curated a beautiful show on <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Charles_Cordier\">Charles Cordier\u00a0<\/a>in the Spring of 2004, she moved to the United States, where her husband <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Olivier_Meslay\">Olivier Meslay<\/a> was named head curator of European Arts at the Dallas Museum of Art. Since 2016, he is director of the Clark Institute in Massachusetts, a fantastic museum with a large library to research her subject. Her father, <a href=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Emmanuel_de_Margerie\">Emmanuel de Margerie,<\/a> was French ambassador in Washington from 1984 to 1989 and had been director of French Museums in the 1970\u2019s. Nor did I know that 10% of French sculptures on the American soil were by Auguste Rodin. <a href=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Antoinette_Le_Normand-Romain\">Antoinette Le Normand Romain<\/a>, \u00a0who used to run Mus\u00e9e Rodin, contributed to the book and her successor,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.culture.gouv.fr\/Presse\/Communiques-de-presse\/Nomination-d-Amelie-Simier-a-la-direction-du-musee-Rodin\">Am\u00e9lie Simier<\/a>, was present at the talk. As was Christophe Leribault president of Mus\u00e9e d\u2019Orsay. The founding fathers of the US were all sculpted by French artists, <a href=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Caffieri\">Caffieri<\/a>made a monument to General Richard Montgomery and <a href=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jean-Antoine_Houdon\">Houdon<\/a> \u00a0made a mask of George Washington in Mount Vernon. In 1865,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pierre_Mezzara\">Pierre Mazzara<\/a>, who had emigrated to California, made the first statue of Abraham Lincoln after he was murdered.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4987\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4987\" style=\"width: 302px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-4987\" src=\"https:\/\/framemuseums.org\/new\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/IMG_6738-240x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"302\" height=\"378\" srcset=\"https:\/\/framemuseums.org\/new\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/IMG_6738-240x300.jpg 240w, https:\/\/framemuseums.org\/new\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/IMG_6738-10x12.jpg 10w, https:\/\/framemuseums.org\/new\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/IMG_6738.jpg 610w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 302px) 100vw, 302px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4987\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em><span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\">Am\u00e9lie Simier, director of Mus\u00e9e Rodin and Laure de Margerie, dressed in vintage Balmain<\/span><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The author talked about <a href=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/%C3%89douard_Lefebvre_de_Laboulaye\">Edouard de Laboulaye<\/a> (1811-1883) \u00a0who first had the idea of the Statue of Liberty by <a href=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Auguste_Bartholdi\">Bartholdi<\/a>, one of the most emblematic French sculptures. She mentioned a monumental vase by <a href=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gustave_Dor%C3%A9\">Gustave Dor\u00e9<\/a>, \u00a0\u201cAn apology of vine\u201d 1878-1882, and also the numerous collections of animal sculptures by <a href=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Antoine-Louis_Barye\">Barye<\/a>, which populate American museums. Including the National Museum of Wildlife Art in Jackson, Wyoming. Sculpture was used for political and diplomatic purposes as early as 1770 to celebrate the friendship between our two nations. Later, at the beginning of the XX th century, it was acquired for decorative purposes and became a personal pleasure for collectors. While there is a <a href=\"https:\/\/rodinmuseum.org\/\">Rodin Museum<\/a> in Philadelphia, the first sculpture acquired by MoMA was a <a href=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Aristide_Maillol\">Maillol<\/a>, in 1929. \u201cLe Torse de l\u2019Ile de France\u201d was subsequently sold to the Metropolitan Museum where it is now. \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kressfoundation.org\/Kress-Collection\/History\">Samuel H. Kress<\/a>, the great collector of the National Gallery bought a \u201cVenus\u201d modeled on Madame de Pompadour by <a href=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/%C3%89tienne_Maurice_Falconet\">Falconet<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hearst_Castle\">William Randolph Hearst<\/a> furnished his gardens of \u00a0San Simeon with French sculptures by <a href=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Charles_Georges_Cassou\">Charles Georges Cassou<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4988\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4988\" style=\"width: 459px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-4988\" src=\"https:\/\/framemuseums.org\/new\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/3379_ca_site_page_media_media_7_original-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"459\" height=\"306\" srcset=\"https:\/\/framemuseums.org\/new\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/3379_ca_site_page_media_media_7_original-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/framemuseums.org\/new\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/3379_ca_site_page_media_media_7_original-768x513.jpg 768w, https:\/\/framemuseums.org\/new\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/3379_ca_site_page_media_media_7_original-18x12.jpg 18w, https:\/\/framemuseums.org\/new\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/3379_ca_site_page_media_media_7_original.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 459px) 100vw, 459px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4988\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em><span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\">The Merci Train was sent in 1949 loaded with presents from the French nation<\/span><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The list of artists includes some who have become French like Brancusi or who have moved to America like Mezzara. In the last 150 years, American museums have consistently acquired French sculptures every year and Laure de Margerie\u2019s research is endless. When I asked her what her greatest discovery had been, she answered: \u201cEvery day, I find new exciting pieces and my work is a constant happiness\u201d.
