First, Mary Cassatt, a member of the group from 1879, convinced her friends and family to buy superb paintings, and, soon afterwards, collectors in Boston and Chicago entered the fray. Mrs. Potter Palmer, the Chicago collector, owned more than 100 paintings by Monet alone by 1900, and, with the opening of the Durand-Ruel Gallery in New York in 1886, Americans could see the latest and best French vanguard painting without crossing the Atlantic Ocean.
